The Future of Christmas and Holiday Lighting Has Arrived

The traditional incandescent light bulb has been used in Christmas decorations since the first Christmas tree was lit up in New York City in 1882. For the next 120 years, incandescent lights would be the foundation for virtually all Christmas decorations throughout the world. Very little changed in the technology of the light bulb for over a century, until the late 1990’s when breakthroughs in technology and manufacturing began to allow for the creation of a revolutionary new way of lighting up Christmas decorations.

LED is an acronym that stands for Light Emitting Diode. LED technology has been around for many years, being commonly used in digital clocks, calculators, and other electronic equipment that do not require high levels of illumination. However, new advances in LED technology have caused a recent explosion in the amount of LEDs being used throughout the world. Within the next 10 years, LEDs will nearly completely replace traditional incandescent lighting in virtually all applications.

The single greatest benefit when converting to LED lighting is the immense power savings. LED Christmas lighting uses up to 90% less power than standard incandescent lighting. While LED light sets cost slightly more than traditional lights, the extra cost is recouped very quickly due to the power savings and the longevity of the lights themselves. While a standard incandescent Christmas light is generally rated for 3,000 hours, Christmas Designers’ LED light sets are rated for 150,000 hours. Simply stated, if the lights were left on every night for 10 hours per night, the bulbs would last for about 40 years.

In a side by side comparison, the LED light set on the left clearly stands out. The LED light set is not only substantially brighter, it also only uses 10% of the electricity of the regular mini light.

Christmas Designers' Earth Friendly LED Options

Because of our position as a leader in the commercial Christmas decorating industry, we feel that it is our responsibility to take the leading role in the business by implementing a more environmentally responsible approach to Christmas and holiday decorating.

Christmas Designers is the first commercial Christmas company to offer LED lighting alternatives on every decoration we sell. From single pole decs all the way up to 100 foot Rocky Mountain Pine Trees, we offer the latest LED technology on all decorations

The U.S. Department of Energy did a study recently entitled, "Energy Savings Estimates of Light Emitting Diodes in Niche Lighting Applications." The study points out that, conservatively, 2-billion Kilowatt hours of electricity can be saved in one 30 day period during the holidays each year if traditional holiday lights were replaced by LED based holiday lights. That's enough electricity to power about 200,000 homes for a year!

While the electrical cost savings for cities, communities and businesses that switch to LED Christmas and holiday lights is incredible, the greatest advantage is the amount of carbon dioxide and other polluting byproducts of electricity that can be significantly reduced by getting away from traditional incandescent light bulbs. This is the greatest gift that we can give to each other and the world we live in.
