Plan Your Layout

Choose where you’d like to hang your icicle lights and ensure an outlet is close enough to plug into. Measure every edge that you’ll hang your icicle lights so that you can figure how many strands you’ll need.

Use Light Clips

The best way to put up lights along edges like rooflines is with light clips. Unlike nails or screws, light clips are easy to use and hold lights securely without damaging the surface they’re against or the light strand itself.

Icicle lights have special clips that do an excellent job of holding the lights up. Our Icicle Light Clips are so durable, you can keep up them up year-round even after you take your lights down for easy installation for seasons to come.

If you’d like a light clip that’s more versatile and can be used with other types of lights in addition to icicle lights, consider the All Application Clip. It’s a convenient clip if you like to switch up your lighting from holiday-to-holiday.

Spacing the Lights

When you install lights with clips, spacing is straightforward. A clip between each drop is fantastic for icicle lights, providing a baseline for the right amount of support without the line being too tight or too loose.

Test the Lights

Inspect each strand carefully for signs of damage such as fraying, splitting, or cuts, and look over each bulb for damage, too. If a line has any fraying or damage, or if any sockets are cracked, replace the strand immediately to prevent an electrical hazard.

Plug in each strand to power individually to ensure all bulbs are in working order. Check and replace any fuses as necessary.

Secure and Connect

Prepare your light runs ahead of hanging them. Icicle light strands tend to be compressed from storing or new. Straighten out the strand and each light drop by pulling them gently. While not every drop may appear perfectly straight after pulling, your icicle lights will likely take a straighter shape as they hang. Connect every strand together for the measured run and place the light clips between each drop.

Install your icicle lights using clips to secure the string against the edge and adjust as needed to strike the balance between a tight and loose line.

Safety Tips

  • Use a sturdy ladder on flat ground when hanging lights
  • Have a trusted friend or family member around when you hang your lights and have that person hold the ladder while you use it
  • Hang your lights on a day of clear weather with low wind
  • Avoid decorating on a roof or ladder when snow or ice is on the ground and roof
