How to Set Up a Christmas Photo Booth: 10 More Creative Ideas
The Christmas photo booth is the perfect way to connect with the people around you. Gathering for a picture is a way to share time, a way to share smiles, and a way to share laughter. These interactions are a part of what makes the holidays so special. A sense of connectedness with the people around you is a major pillar of what defines the holiday spirit. And your Christmas photo booth is defined by decorating that puts holiday magic into every photo.
This is the second part in our two-part series on creating a holiday-themed photo booth for your event. Be sure to check out part one if you haven’t already. And now, let’s explore 10 more creative idea for your Christmas photo booth.
10 More Creative Ideas for Your Christmas Photo Booth
Santa’s Workshop Scene
Let guests step into the busiest place at the North Pole, abuzz with the excitement of crafting holiday wonders. Set up the Christmas imagery with a combination of garland and LED fairy lights hanging from the backdrop frame. Create an authentic aesthetic for the workshop by placing a table or desk as a workbench for Santa’s helpers. Decorate the desk with hand tools and gift boxes for a true workshop feel.
Rustic Holiday
Rustic settings help make undeniably charming pictures. Combine Christmas with a rustic setting, and you have a photo booth that invites guests to stand for some pretty pictures.
Use a backdrop of a wooden texture, or for a next-level background, lean actual wood panels against the backdrop. Build out the booth’s rustic setting with decor to match such as a wagon wheel, a toboggan, or a barrel. Rustic settings go hand-in-hand with organic-style adornments, too, so consider adding greenery such as garland and pinecones on the toboggan, a wreath on the wood paneling, and a spray attached to the wagon wheel.
Candy Cane Lane
This photo booth will give your guests a fun way to experience this ultimate holiday candy. Set up a green backdrop to match the red and white of the candy canes that you’ll add for a complete holiday palette, or try a blue background to give the feeling of being outside on Candy Cane Lane (bonus points if you put up paper cutout snowflakes).
For the furnishings, oversized candy canes that flank both sides of the booth present a Candy Cane Lane that proudly beckons guests. Put up red and white string lights from the backdrop’s frame and hang actual candy canes along the string. T5 and M5 lights are nice options for string lights that look great indoors. You can also put up peppermint candy decorations on the photo booth backdrop for extra detail.
Cozy Fireplace Setting
Even for people who don’t have a fireplace, Christmas is commonly associated with imagery that includes a cozy-looking living room featuring a fireplace—which becomes an entrance for Santa during his annual visit. Give your guests a part in this imagery by building a faux fireplace out of cardboard or wooden panels and kraft paper. Hang stockings from the mantel and pile up some logs in front of it, or inside of it if you build your faux fireplace with some dimension. Add homestyle furniture such as an armchair and nightstand. Put up warm white Christmas lights over the fireplace. And use a darker colored backdrop in a color such as black or burgundy so that the fireplace and additional furnishings are easier to focus on.
Reindeer Stable
This setting stands out and gives your guests a chance to share some laughs. Dress the booth with hay bales and wood panels, and put up sleigh bells from the backdrop or place on top of the bales. Place a wooden arch and wrap it in garland or warm white string lights for a fitting rustic atmosphere. You can also give the arch a look of being the stable’s entrance by putting sprays on both vertical supports. Hand out antler headbands so that guests can become honorary members of Santa’s sleigh team.
The Snow Globe Experience
Snow globes show beautiful scenes and favorite holiday figures surrounded by mesmerizing swirls of snowflakes. Put guests in the middle of the magic with this snow globe experience. Use a white or light blue backdrop, or a backdrop that features an image of a snowy woods, to establish the snow globe atmosphere.
For the “globe”, use a round backdrop stand. You can also make a DIY globe arch out of flexible PVC pipe or PEX pipes with flange and connectors to anchor the arch down. For a snow globe base that guests can stand on, make a round stage out of 3/4 inch plywood and 2x4’s. Most round backdrop stands are approximately seven feet in diameter, so cut the plywood stage platform to a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the round backdrop stand for an accurate sizing between the base and snow globe arch. Cut red kraft paper from a roll to the circumference of the snow globe’s base and attach it around the base’s perimeter. Cover the floor with artificial snow such as snow blankets, and pile up some flurries for more effect. If your base has enough room, place a snow flocked tabletop tree or two. Consider adding a message on the base along with decorations for a festive presentation.
A Comfy Christmas
This idea brings guests together on a couch for a comfy photo. Set up the couch in the middle of the photo booth and place other furnishing such as an end table on the side or coffee table in front. Place Christmas decor like a Santa mug and reindeer figurines on top of the table. Put up an indoor Christmas tree decked out for the occasion behind the couch, or a Christmas wreath and garland from the backdrop frame. Get everyone even closer with a prop photo frame that displays a heartwarming Christmas greeting, and your photos will share good vibes that are positively infectious.
Vintage Christmas Vibes
Relish in the retro with this photo booth. Channel idyllic times through retro color palettes, and show your unique style with antique or retro-looking decor. Browse an antique store to find the perfect photo booth dressing, such as lamps, chairs, and tables. Turn up the vintage vibes with Christmas decorations such as mercury glass trees, bottle brush trees, and a miniature Christmas village. And take the vintage vibes to the max with an indoor Christmas tree decorated in vintage-style decorations, such as T5 Christmas lights and ornaments in metallic greens, light blues, and pinks that replicate the look of the iconic Shiny Brites; striped ornaments; tinsel; finials; and figurines (Santas and nutcrackers are always classic).
Santa’s Sleigh
Oh what fun it is! Let guests go for a “ride” in Christmas’s enchanting chariot. You can find different ways to make a sleigh, but an easy DIY version consists of sleigh-shaped cut-outs fixed together by supports, and an open back to fit a couple chairs for guests to sit in. Trace a sleigh shape in a large plywood sheet. Cut the shape out, then place it over the next sheet, and trace along it for a matching shape to cut. Fix 2x2 supports between the shaped cut-outs to assemble the sleigh. Leave the back of the sleigh open for a couple chairs. Cut the 2x2’s to a length that allows for two people to sit comfortably beside each other. Cover the front of the sleigh with a cut sheet of plywood. Paint the sleigh, let the paint dry, pull some chairs in, and your guests are ready to ride. And for the background, a simple outdoors presentation will give the look of a sleigh ride in action. Use a blue or wintry image backdrop and put artificial snow on the floor. Consider snow flocked trees to populate the sides of the booth.
If you have the budget, then go all out and put your guests in a premium 2-seat or 4-seat Santa sleigh!
Glam Holiday Party Booth
This idea is particularly appropriate for an event in the direction of New Years’. Set the scene with a metallic gold or silver backdrop and fairy lights fashioned into drops from the top of the backdrop. Set up a high-top table with a clean white table cloth and have a fairy light tree be the centerpiece. Hang a LED sphere from the middle of the backdrop reminiscent of the Times Square Ball. Top off the table with champagne glasses and metallic confetti, and your booth will show an enticing look of celebration! Offer your guests some party style props such as top hats, tiaras, glasses, and bow ties.
