Do LED Christmas Lights Get Hot?
LED Christmas lights do not get hot, unlike incandescent lights which are hot by nature, as their light is created by heating up a filament in the bulb. LED Christmas lights stay cool to the touch thanks to a modern design and superior energy efficiency.
LED Christmas lights operate in a fundamentally different way from incandescent Christmas lights. The very way that incandescent bulbs make light is through generating heat. Light is created by the heating of a filament to a state in which it glows. Incandescent Christmas lights are hot by nature. This form of light generation is called “the principle of incandescence”. LED Christmas lights, however, stay cool because they generate light in a completely different way. Light is created by electricity reaching a semiconductor in the bulb known as a diode (the D in LED—Light Emitting Diode), which then emits photons to output light. Because LED lights do not create light through heat, they operate at a much cooler temperature that makes them safe to handle and have around other decorations. There is very little risk of children or pets being burned by LED lights. In certain cases, LED Christmas lights can overheat. This can happen through LED lights being left on for very long periods of time.
Along with their cool operating temperature, LED lights have more advantages over incandescent lights. Discover them in this list of benefits of LED Christmas lights.
